ELLECOM Supports Young Scientists Advancing RNA-Based Therapeutic Research

Supporting scientific innovation and the next generation of researchers.

ELLECOM is proud to have supported the iGEM Heidelberg 2022 team, an interdisciplinary group of young scientists from Heidelberg University exploring an innovative therapeutic approach to neuroinfectious diseases.

The team's research project, Hersiran, investigated the potential of small interfering RNA (siRNA) technology to target the herpes simplex virus (HSV), which can cause life-threatening inflammation of the brain, known as herpes simplex encephalitis.

A central challenge in treating neurological infections is delivering therapeutic substances to the brain, where the blood-brain barrier restricts the entry of many compounds.

To address this challenge, the team investigated the encapsulation of siRNA in liposomes - lipid-based carriers designed to protect RNA from degradation -and explored a nose-to-brain delivery approach using the olfactory and trigeminal pathways. This strategy aims to bypass some of the limitations associated with conventional drug delivery to the central nervous system.

The project represents an exciting proof-of-concept research initiative in RNA-based therapeutics and targeted drug delivery, with further development and validation required before potential clinical application.

Beyond their laboratory research, the Heidelberg team actively promoted scientific education through school workshops, public engagement and communication activities designed to make synthetic biology accessible to a wider audience.

At ELLECOM, we believe that supporting young scientific talent and interdisciplinary research contributes to the future of healthcare innovation. We are pleased to have been part of an initiative that combines scientific curiosity, technological development and a commitment to addressing challenging medical needs.
